League Formats & Structures

Domestic league formats and structures are a fundamental part of the club football landscape. The unique disruption of the covid pandemic has led to 60% (33 of the 54 European top division leagues) changing their format, structure and/or number of participating clubs between 2020 and 2022, underlining the importance of analysis in this area. The UEFA club benchmarking report (“European Club Footballing Landscape”) has been the only publication to track changes and trends across the last decade. Moreover the formation of the UEFA Intelligence Centre has allowed a profound deepening and broadening of analysis and insight on domestic leagues and cups.
