Club ownership is fundamental to the workings of club football. The majority of semi-professional clubs and many fully professional clubs still rely on the owner(s) benefactor model as their strategy. Profiling how club legal structures differ across Europe is a first step to understanding club ownership. Understanding the profile of who legally owns a club and/or who has significant influence on each club in Europe provides a further window into club strategy and objectives and trends in club ownership. Ownership information allows complex issues, such as multi-club ownership or investment by foreign parties to be better analysed.

The UEFA Intelligence Centre utilises the club licensing network and Intelligence Centre Benchmarking survey covering approximately 700 clubs to build the only multi-league picture of club ownership profiles and trends. This is supplemented by desktop research, that often looks beyond Europe, to profile investors and investments in the European game. Ownership data can then be overlayed or combined with other measures such as financial support levels (equity injections or loan financing), facility investment levels or sporting performance, to drive insight.
